Trying to set up used laptop for internet use and having trouble?

I bought a used laptop and we have a netgear router. The laptop is showing a strong connection, but won’t let me on the internet. It is saying that it can’t renew the IP address. Any ideas of what to do. I just installed an antivirus program thinking that possibly there could be a virus.
