Introducing the Xcore86 and new Gecko Edubook
The Xcore86 is a new Device on Chip that features a full x86 computer on a single chip. This video shows how the Xcore86 can be used to power future handheld devices that will be able to run existing x86 operating systems such as Windows and Linux. Also shown is the upcoming new Gecko Edubook. The Gecko Edubook is the least expensive 8.9 inch screen x86 netbook available. It is also fanless, features standard rechargable AA nimh batteries and can be booted from a standard SD or 2.5 inch hard disk.

this was an excellent idea and i’m very pleased that the company was able to get it off the ground at the stated price point. i wish them all the success in the world; i especially hope that low-middle income developing countries pick this up in mass quantities and gain the costs savings from low power usage and using linux distributions.
fans in which dust has accumulated can end up sounding very loud, as the blades struggle to move through the coagulated dust and dirt.
1)any idea (will or) when will this come to india?…
2)is the psu bulid in the device,what are the specs or power rating for the basic system?
one more thing can you play some videos and browsing test in the next video may be…
We have had several contacts from Nivio but nothing definite. The Power supply is internal. The system draws 8 watts or so. I am not sure what you are asking about video. We are not promoting the device for movie playing. There is no video acceleration on board the CPU.
Thank you.
Well, it sounds like a very very promising machine (I mean the Gecko), but PLEASE… choose an appropriate scenario for the video next time… maybe a white background, good lightening, good sound etc.
The Brazilian government is always looking for good and cheap machines (for educational programs), maybe it can be a good opportunity for your company, not only here.
regards.
I have had a lot of comments on the video quality. The unit in this video was the very first prototype which we had to ship to Africa for evaluation the very next day. I only had the unit in my hands for a few hours. We are now shipping out pre production units to potential dealers and partners and the final units should ship in August. We are very interested in all Education projects.
I need 4,000 units for india. Can this be possible. Can it run with Windows?
At what price would it be for a non profit who needs minimum 4,000 units?
Nice work, nice technology, nice humanity! I would work at Nohr for free.
No adapter!!! Freedooooooooom!!
is this real ??
because this so good to be true
i want to say well done
No, he’s an actor and he does a good job at making this look real.
ARM SoCs can run Linux or BSD, and come in even smaller packages sometimes
Windows (except Windows CE) is still a problem, but that’s Microsoft’s fault, not the fault of the chip maker.
Still, this is a cool packaging of the nasty old monster called x86.
We have experience with ARM. Customers deploying a solution on a small number of computers will find that the tool chain and development tools for ARM and other RISC processors more costly. A low-cost / energy efficient x86 platform allows existing applications to be easily deployed on new form factors for less money. The Xcore86 is a SoC that provides the cost and energy benefits of ARM but able to run x86 applications and OS’.
We have been shipping. There are some reviews coming out soon.
Windows XP runs fine.
I’m actually really impressed by this netbook product. I’m considering buying one. How much is it?
So, is it 1024×768 or 1024×600?
wow.. norh will start shipping worldwide
@apopheniacMCMLXXXIX : around 200$ from what I read
What I particularly like is the fact that you can run the computer off standard rechargeable batteries and that the internals are quite accessible. Very well done, I’m impressed ! I’m tempted
@speedsterh
I agree. I like that everything is very standardized and the innards are, as you put it, “accessible”. I will probably buy one when I have $200 to spare (I’m currently poor).
Will you ship it to Russia? I mean Geckos?
We can ship almost anywhere but we are hoping to find dealers who will ship in bulk.
