How do you find a good cheap used laptop?
You look for one.
Where do you think Used laptops are sold? On the west coast, there are Laptop recyclers. Back east, you are looking at Craig’s List, Ebay… sites like that… COMMON SENSE should guide you.
Why buy used? Have you even looked around? Did you know you can get a $299 Toshiba at BestBuy?

Hmm… used, older laptop for $500.. or Brand new warrantied Toshiba for $300.
No brainer on that one dude.
well the best possible laptop to get would be a mac but for $500 you could get the acer small light weight has intel core 2 duo at&t internal internet and much more

A very informative website, kindly stay a minute in website and check
D0 NOT BUY CHEAP LAPTOP
It will become expensive for u
try for new one
Nowadays $500 is borderline for a nice new laptop. You could probably try Craigslist.com; there are hundreds of listings over there.
You can get a nice refurb unit from a reputable company like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com. You could also try Craigslist, you could then go and actually see/use it before you buy it.
Where I live we have a newspaper that people can put free for sale adds in. It is a big paper and has been around for a long time. All the ads are local. Any chance you have a similar paper in your area? But like the posting said, buying something used is always a shot in the dark. Remember the saying is let the buyer beware. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
It depends on what you are going to use the laptop mostly for. Don’t forget, Macs or PC you need compatible software. Prices varies with the hardware specification. For general use, I would choose laptops that has intel core 2 duo and at least 1GB ram and WiFi built-in, hard disk of at least 160 GB. I would consider Dell Inspiron or Studio, Sony Vaio and Toshiba Satellite.
Unfortunately $500 just isn’t going to cut it for a good laptop. Unless you want something that is sure to break within a year, that is extremely slow, small, and with a limited hard drive, you are out of luck. If you are willing to shell out an extra 500, you can get a new mac which I can promise you will last at least 5 years.
For $500 I would recommend the Dell Inspiron (a decent laptop) http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndwza2&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=laptop-inspiron-1545 .. I would avoid the mac for the following..
You should get a PC.
(Also, note: Don’t just trust what people say, they could pretend that they are something that they are not and make up personal experiences.. So look at the facts that backup the claims))
Reasons not to get a Mac.
1) Mac uses a subset of PC hardware but you pay significantly more for it.
http://blogs.eweek.com/applewatch/content/channel/should_you_pay_twice_as_much_for_a_mac.html
2) Mac OS X less secure than either Windows Vista or Linux. Mac OS X was hacked in 30 min., 2. min, in 2006, 2008, 10 seconds in 2009.

3) Although Mac currently does not have as many Spyware/Viruses they are on the rise.

4) Linux has more cool effects than Mac OS X and can do every effect Mac can do..

5) For graphics/video production PC is equally as good. Each company has it’s preferences but Dreamworks Animation uses PCs

6) All computer manufacturers have problems but there are plenty of problems with Mac.
Sample problem with battery reveals truth http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2007/04/apple-acknowledges-macbook-battery-problems.ars

7) Follow the logic:
Facts…
A) XP and Linux are faster than Vista, Mac
B) OS X runs faster with more memory,
C) Vista runs faster than OS X on Mac with 2+gb http://www.gadgetell.com/tech/comment/vista-runs-faster-on-mac-pro-than-apples-os-x/
logical deduction from facts above (
– CONCLUSION: A PC with Vista 2+gb runs faster than Mac OS X with lower specs but even with higher specs since a Mac uses the same components (so if B AND C are true this is a true statement, AND A would be even faster) as a PC .., remember Linux and XP run faster than Vista..
ANOTHER OPTION: Dual boot with LINUX – You don’t need to choose Windows or Linux… have both at no extra cost..
